WELL-Defined
Dehydroepiandrosterone, DHEA, is one of the hormones produced by the adrenal glands, brain and gonads (sex glands). DHEA helps produce the sex hormones testosterone and estrogen.
Considered the anti-aging hormone, DHEA helps keep our energy levels and metabolism high while maintaining bone density— all things that change as we age and our natural production of DHEA slows. (Our bodies hit peak DHEA production in our 20s.)
The Fine Print
The NCAA and the World Anti-Doping Agency has banned DHEA use among athletes. Consult your doctor before taking DHEA as a supplement. Do not take DHEA if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
