WELL-Defined
Endocrine disrupting chemicals (EDCs) include a number of manufactured and natural substances like pesticides, BPA (found in plastics and resins) and phthalates (common in fragrances and plastic). They have the ability to interfere with the regular function of the endocrine system, which is responsible for hormone production.
The Fine Print
The EWG has identified 12 endocrine disruptors on its Dirty Dozen list, which includes BPA, dioxin, atrazine, phthalates, perchlorate, fire retardants, lead, arsenic, mercury, PFCs, organophosphate pesticides and glycol ethers. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, consult with your doctor about your diet and lifestyle as it relates to potential hazards.
Where We Come In
This is why reading that ingredient label is so important. Endocrine disruptors have been linked to increased incidence of breast cancer, abnormal growth patterns and autoimmune diseases. Paying attention to what goes in and on our bodies is the most important step we can take in avoiding harmful interactions.
